So far, we haven't said much about the work we are doing at Calvary Commission. In the attic behind the sanctuary, there was some space to build additional living quarters for visiting missionaries. We put in a separate electrical box with 5 new breakers to accommodate electrical needs (small bedroom, 2 window AC's, bathroom, washroom and shower), put in the floor over the joists, then also started sheetrocking the walls.

The picture shows one of the more interesting things that we had to do. When the shower was purchased, there was no thought about how we were going to get it upstairs. Being 36 inches wide, it barely came in the door (had to remove some molding), but could not get it to the second floor through the staircase which was just 32 inches across. We had to cut a hole through the ceiling to lift the shower up.

Friday, January 26 - Santa Ana Wildlife Refuge

Back to the Santa Ana Refuge today. Weather was better, and we took the tram ride around the refuge. We saw many more birds. Some below:

Best picture yet of a Green Jay, a very striking bird found in the US only here in the lower Rio Grande valley. Also, a rare photo catch of a Roadrunner. The roadrunners are so fast they should be called Road Crossers.

Saturday, January 27

The town of Mission had its annual Orange Fiesta this weekend: parade, barbeque cook-off, food, crafts, etc. We took in the parade.

This is a serious barbeque cook-off. There were quite a few entrants who came with chuck wagons full of stuff for the competition.

But we couldn't wait to eat till after the parade several hours later. So, this lady cooked us up some fantastic quesadillas.

You know that in the Parade of Roses, floats are decorated with roses. Here. the floats are decorated with slices of oranges and grapefruit.

There were, of course, many school bands and fire engines. One of the most interesting floats wasn't a float - a large grocery cart by HEB! At the end, we were treated to a show by horses that pranced and danced down the street. A great parade nearly two hours long.
