Saturday, August 26

Ed's sister, Mimi, went to Ontario this past Thursday to spend a week with her daughter Monica.  This trip was one of the reasons that Ed and Patty were in Montreal -  to be here while Mimi was away.  Today, Saturday, Ed and Patty went to town to pick up Ed's aunt Mary (his mother's sister) so that they could spent some time together.  When Ed and Patty returned with Mary, the house was quiet.  His mom thought that Mimi's husband, Frank, had been downstairs on the computer.  It wasn't so.

Ed found Frank lying on his bed dead, apparently from a heart attack.

Frank was a good man, probably especially so to his wife Mimi, but friendly and generous to all and respected by all.   Hungarian by birth, and Hungarian by nature, he had also spent some time in the French Foreign Legion, including 5 years in Indochina, now Vietnam.  What's Hungarian by nature, you ask?  Frank loved to cook and make wine as well as dill pickles.   His recipes should be published!  He had names for each of them .  What a way with every kind of meat!   Paprika, garlic, sausage, fish and wine and wine sauces were a part of nearly every day.  No potatoes or bread, thank you.  Very little in the way of eating leftovers, as well.   It must be fresh!

His wine tasting and drinking (never to excess) took a down turn with the advent of a heart attack not long ago, but he was still able to have a glass on every special occasion.  In fact, he had been in the process of making some more wine this past week, even made some summer pickles last week.  (Summer pickles:  gallon bottles of cucumbers in salt brine, with fresh dill and a slice of rye bread,  placed in the sun for a few days).

His time as a Legionnaire colored his life.  He was never more proud than when talking about the Legion, his time in the service or watching the July 14 parade in Paris on TV.  He was advanced and decorated for his service.

Most of all, he loved his wife, Ed's sister Mimi.  The love was reciprocal.

We'll miss him...

Frank's funeral service today.  A nice service with many friends and family attending.

We all die, sooner or later.   I don't say this as a matter of fate, but a matter of fact.   It's interesting that most of us spend little time thinking about that day, but at times like this, it's useful to ponder where you will be spending eternity.  Are you sure you know where you will be headed, or are you hoping?  Hope is good, but assurance is better, infinitely better.  Scripture tells us that it is possible to be certain, to know for sure, to have assurance of salvation.  Email us at soltes@soltesweb.net if you have any doubts or questions, and we'll direct you to the Source.

We will pick up again on the next page.
