Thursday, Sept. 13

We started back a few miles to the Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge that featured a boardwalk hike through the marsh. It was enjoyable, and we learned a lot from the interpretive signs.

Rachel Carson was a very passionate writer, and responsible for stopping the use of DDT and then most of the green environmental movement. It's easy to get swayed by her writing.

We then drove Hwy 9 south, following the coast where we could. The towns of Wells, Ogunquit, York and Kittery are very rich with many mansions. Then we crossed into New Hampshire at Portsmouth, where we continued on 1A to Hampton Beach State Park.

The first two pictures are of a lobster pound where we stopped for lobster. The lighthouse is the Cape Neddick Light.

We camped overnight on this beach access campground near the Massachusetts border. Isn't it something? Unfortunately, it was windy and cold....

We went to bed early to get up early to do Interstate travel to Newark, Delaware.

Friday, Sept. 14

This was a hussle day. To get to Newark, Delaware by 5 pm to see friends, the Awokuse’s, we took the following interstates: 95 to 495 in Massachusetts to 290 to 90 to 84 thought Massachusetts and Connecticut to 87 in New York to Garden State Parkway in New Jersey to the New Jersey Turnpike to 95 in Delaware. 423 miles!

Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 15-16

We enjoyed the company of our friends and their three children.

Monday, Sept. 17

On the road again in the morning. We took Hwy 72 in Newark (to Delaware City, see picture of this old town), to Hwy 9, then south on 9 through Delaware, taking many small roads towards the shore in Delaware Bay. We saw several large ships in the bay.

We were surprised at the height of the Hwy 9 bridge over the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. We passed several WWI and WWII Forts in State Parks off 9. One of them held German prisoners-of-war during WWII. On this road, we saw many old villages, many started in late 1600’s. The village of Port Penn once had a very large cannery that canned local vegetables, especially tomatoes.

We stopped at a Wildlife Education Center, and learned much about horseshoe crabs. The scientist that has been studying them showed us around and spent a good amount of time with us. See later for some pictures of these interesting creatures.

At the Bombay Hook Wildlife Refuge, we took walks around ponds, and saw many birds, as well as a raccoon. We picked up a book on “The Art of Pishing”, or how to attract birds by imitating their sounds, We found the information works!

We saw millions of these yellow flowers.

We had supper at Sambo’s in Leipsic. At this restaurant, soft shell crab was the thing to order. We were amused when a couple of elderly ladies (70, 70+?) sat down to a pitcher of beer and a pile of crabs! After this, drove west to Dover where we stayed overnight at Sam’s Club.
